My thirty-year background in the Martial Arts combined with a license as a Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistics/Time Line Therapy and Hypnotherapy, has enabled me to witness thousands of students achieving excellence instead of mediocrity in their chosen sport or endeavor.

Once that individual's body structure has been assessed to be geared towards the ultimate goal set for that particular athlete, I then proceed to assess the athlete's mental resources for achieving a specific outcome. Thereafter, a programme is specifically designed for each individual and closely monitored to ensure that the programme is actually producing the desired results. Past and current clients have included Canadian Olympic athletes, U.S. Olympic Athletes, NHL players, Olympic Boxers, Professional Golfers, and a World Masters Cycling Champion.

Lesson 7: YOU ARE THE LEADING EDGE

In working with world-class athletes, it's been my observation that most of their self-imposed limitations were developed at a young age, either at a Junior College or University level. During those early years, none of these athletes had access to an MSEP (mental sports enhancement performance) coach, rather they worked solely with a technical coach. If we are to train and develop world-caliber athletes, simply focusing on the physical aspect of the training is no longer sufficient. For example, an athlete will train very diligently in order to achieve a desired outcome and when that outcome is not realized, he/she will interpret that as having failed, not only him or her self, but his whole entourage. Disappointed, the athlete either verbally and/or mentally rationalizes that hard work is supposed to bring success and because he/she was not "successful", inner conflict and negative anchoring begins to take place. This negative pattern can be avoided by ascertaining whether the problem (if there is one) is technical, physiological or psychological.

In my experience with numerous athletes over the years, I have observed that some eventually decide to turn to performance enhancing drugs because there is a distorted belief that hard work alone simply will not achieve the desired result...winning! Consequently, I have designed a programme which helps determine and assess exactly wherein the problem (if any) lies, i.e., technical (training coach), physiological (physician) or psychological (MSEP coach). Once determined, proper measures can be taken to rid the athlete of whatever obstacles are preventing him/her from achieving the best possible outcome. The athlete can be taught to take full advantage of his/her psychological strengths thus providing a definite edge in even the most competitive events.

Through the art of visualization and relaxation techniques, the athlete can be taught "centredness" which will enable him/her to better manage and control through body through the power of the mind. Physical training is crucial and fundamental to any sport, however, proper mental training in conjunction with the existing excellent physical programmes, the athlete can achieve infinitely better results. With the elimination of certain mental obstacles or restrictions, the athlete's power and achievements will know no bounds.
